A 30 minute website audit you can do over a cup of tea

If your website has been quietly sitting there — not broken, but not quite working either — this one is for you.
It's unlikely that you need a full rebrand, nor do you need to rewrite your entire content from scratch. And you certainly don't need to block out a whole bucketload of hours that I know you don't really have.
All you need is 30 minutes. And a cup of tea (or coffee, or wine, or straight bourbon, hold the ice — no judgement here).
This isn’t about perfection. It’s simply about finding a little more clarity than you have right now.
And I'm going to step you through it — gently, and hopefully, painlessly. Consider your hand held.
First (5 minutes): Visit your website as if you were a complete stranger
Open up your homepage.
Now imagine you know nothing about your business. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Yes, I know that is hard because you know absolutely everything about your business, but just imagine you are five years old again, and an expert at playing pretend.
Ask yourself:
Is it immediately clear what this person/business does (remembering you are a stranger)?
Is it clear who this person/business helps?
Is it clear what I (the stranger/potential client) should do next?
If someone landed here for the very first time, how would they feel? Clear? A little lost maybe?
You’re not looking for fancy. Bells and whistles are not required. You’re looking for clear messaging, clear direction, clear what do I do next.
Clarity will help build trust much faster than clever wording ever will.
Next (5 minutes): Check your top section
The very top of your homepage matters more than pretty much anything else. It's not called a hero banner for no reason. It's purpose is to grab attention and give visitors a snapshot of what you do.
Look at:
Your headline
Your subheading
Your call to action button
Could a 12-year-old understand what you do from those few lines?
If not, it's time to simplify. That doesn't mean dumbing down your content. It simply means taking away any unnecessary complexity.
It's easy to fall into the trap of trying to sound impressive. Instead, aim for understandable.
Then (5 minutes): Look for the bits that feel sticky (or icky)
Scroll slowly.
Notice where you:
Repeat yourself
Use vague phrases (like “transformational experience” or “innovative solutions”)
Over-explain
Under-explain
Where do you feel slightly unsure as you read?
That feeling? Your clients will feel it too.
Make a note of those sections. You don’t have to fix them straight away — just notice them.
Another 5 minutes: Is there a clear path?
Ask yourself: if someone is ready to work with me, do they know what to do next?
Is there:
A clear call to action (CTA) button?
A visible contact link?
A simple explanation of how to get started?
Websites work best when they guide visitors gently from one piece of information to the next. From a description of your services to how to contact you. Don't leave your visitors trying to figure out the next steps on their own.
Final 10 minutes: Your About & Services pages
Now click into your About page. Does it:
Share why you do this work?
Sound like a real person? Like YOU?
Make it easy to understand what you have to offer?
Then your Services page:
Is it clear what’s included?
Is it clear who it’s for?
Are pricing or next steps clearly explained?
If someone had to decide in five minutes whether to get in touch with you, would they have enough information?
And that’s it
You’ve just done your 30-minute website audit.
No spreadsheets. No overwhelm (I trust). No pulling it all down and starting again.
Just awareness, and a little (or a lot) more clarity than you had a cup of coffee ago.
A gentle reminder
Your website doesn’t need to be louder or fancier (unless you're selling high-end designer handbags or luxury cars, then by all means, go full on fancy)
And if you’ve gone through this and thought, “I can see what needs improving, but I don’t quite know how to fix it…”
That’s completely normal.
This is the work I do — helping you take what’s already there and shape it into something that looks, sounds and feels more like you.
Even if you do nothing else today, those 30 minutes are a powerful place to start.
With kindness,
Leanne
